Lynn's Two-Ingredient Homemade Ant Killer

3 min read · from the video “Homemade Ant Killer With Just 2 Ingredients” (5:24)

When the ants start coming in, Lynn mixes a bait from two things already in the kitchen: two teaspoons of white sugar and two teaspoons of baking soda, stirred together in a solid lid. She says the sugar is what draws the ants to the lid and the baking soda is what does the trick, and that you should expect it to take probably a day or two.

What you need

The whole recipe is two things plus something to put them in. Lynn says to get a lid that is solid so your ingredients stay in, some white sugar, and some baking soda. She notes that powdered sugar works too if that is what you have, and that either one is fine.

Her reason for making it rather than buying is straightforward. She says it means you do not have to go buy those chemical ant killers and put them in your home, and that this is something you probably already have in your kitchen. She is filming it as the weather turns from winter to spring, when she says the ants are starting to come out in the yard and work their way inside.

How Lynn mixes it

She puts two teaspoons of white sugar in the lid first, then matches it, saying at the end that she has done two teaspoons of sugar and two teaspoons of baking soda. That is the whole mixture.

She explains what each part is doing. The sugar is what draws the ants to your little lid, she says, pulling them to one spot instead of all over the counter, and the baking soda is what will kill them once they eat it. As for how, she is careful to put it as her own belief, saying she believes it sort of makes their insides swell up, and she does not say more about it than that.

Where she sets it out

The lid goes wherever the problem is. She names your counter, your bathroom, or whatever area you are having an ant problem with as the places to set it. The example she gives is ants all over the kitchen counter, and she says this will help draw them to one spot.

In her own kitchen she puts it down low where they can reach it because they are going for the water, and she has it dripping to draw them in to the bait. The camera stays on it: a couple of hours later one ant has found the mixture, and about an hour after that there are more in the dish, with one climbing up a nail toward it while she is talking. Once they get in there and have lunch, she says, she does not think they will last long.

What to expect

She does not promise it is instant. She says to give it probably a day or two, and that within a day, maybe two, you will stop seeing your ants. She is also honest about how complete it is, saying you might still see one here and there but that it should get rid of at least 90 percent of your ant problem.

This one is her indoor mix. She says you might could even use it outside too, and that she makes different ones for outside, and mentions a bad time with ants at a campground and a couple of tricks for that she plans to share later. She does not give those mixes in this video.

Follow the labels on every product you mix, and test any cleaner on a small hidden spot first.
